Les Deux Magots

Les Deux Magots is a famous café in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area of Paris. It once had a reputation as the rendez vous of the literary and intellectual élite of the city. It is now a popular tourist destination. Its historical reputation is derived from the patronage of Surrealist artists, intellectuals such as Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, and young writers, such as Ernest Hemingway. Other patrons included Albert Camus, Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, Bertolt Brecht and the American writer Charles Sutherland. The Deux Magots literary prize has been awarded to a French novel every year since 1933.

Café de Flore

The Café de Flore, at the corner of Boulevard Saint-Germain and Rue St. Benoit, in the 6th arrondissement, is one of the oldest and the most prestigious coffeehouse in Paris, celebrated for its famous clientele.

The classic Art Deco interior of all red seating, mahogany and mirrors has changed little since World War II. Like its main rival, Les Deux Magots, it has hosted most of the French intellectuals during the post-war years.

In his essay "A Tale of Two Cafes" and his book « Paris to the Moon », American writer Adam Gopnik mused over the possible explanations of why the Flore had become, by the late 1990s, much more fashionable and popular than its rival, Les Deux Magots, despite the fact that the latter cafe was associated with Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, and other famous thinkers of the 1940s and 1950s. Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai was known to be a frequent patron of Café de Flore during his years in France in the 1920s.

The name is taken from a sculpture of Flora, goddess of flowers and the season of spring in Roman mythology, located on the opposite side of the boulevard. In the late 19th century, Charles Maurras wrote his book Au signe de Flore, on the first floor, where in 1899 the Revue d'Action Française was also founded.

The Café de Flore offers a wide menu range from teas, coffees, hot chocolates, to alcoholic drinks and juices—from snacks to full meals—including toasties and croissants, omelettes, salads, soups and desserts.

Bar 228

Named Bar 228 after the hotel's address on 228 rue de Rivoli, this place has become "the rendez-vous" of Parisians. The cosy atmosphere of Bar 228 has the warmth of British clubs, perhaps due to the many british guests that visited hotel Le Meurice in its early years. Totally reinterpreted by Philippe Starck in December 2007, the warm and hushed decor remains faithful to its origins with wooden bar stools and leather chairs. The atmosphere is subtly warmed by the crackling glow of tobacco shades and highlighted by the sparkle of rare crystal decanters, to be filled at leisure .

Bar Bristol

Le Bar du Bristol was conceived by renowned architect Pierre-Yves Rochon and Mrs Maja Oetker with a combination of classical and modern design to welcome visitors from Paris and around the world.

The atmosphere in the bar itself, which is secluded by thick silk curtains, is evocative of a traditional English club, with exotic wood panelling, a parquet floor made of Versailles oak and a 19th-century marble fireplace from Sienna.

A team of professionals providing excellent service will offer the Bar's guests the opportunity to sample exceptional and rare products, with vertical tastings of prestigious Champagnes, exclusive wines sold by the glass or bottle, classic and newly created cocktails, and exceptional eau-de-vies. Bar Saint James

The only château-hôtel in Paris nestles in a lush green setting, a mere stone’s throw from the Arc de Triomphe and Avenue Victor Hugo: a splendid Napoleon III residence, refurbished with a touch of fantasy by Bambi Sloan, and home to the very select Saint James Club. What was formerly the Thiers Foundation, which once received the most brilliant students in France, has now become a select venue where you can recharge your batteries, right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Paris. The library bar, with its thousands of volumes, provides a private and welcoming setting, just the place to exchange confidences. In the summer, what better place than the magnificent terrace. Here the hot air balloon décor evokes the past of this particular spot: it had been the first aerodrome in Paris!

Chez Prune

Chez Prune is an excellent lunch spot, and still one of the best places to spend an evening on the Canal St-Martin. The local bobo HQ, this traditional café, with high ceilings and low lighting, sticks to a simple formula: groups of friends crowd around the cosily ordered banquettes, picking at moderately priced cheese or meat platters. Mostly, though, they come for a few leisurely drinks or an apéro before heading to one of the late night venues in the area.

La Conserverie

The gorgeous nuit bleu interior will win you over as soon as you step inside, and by the time you sit on the velvet sofas and taste the cocktails you'll want to make this your favourite hangout. The staff are incredibly friendly by Parisian standards. There's a quirky selection of nibbles in tin cans - and regular music nights (live gipsy jazz bands on Mondays; electro on Thursdays and Fridays). Highly recommended.

La Rotonde

Transformed into a bar-restaurant, the magnificent ancient Rotonde on Place Stalingrad has become a favoured destination for partying Parisians. A vestige of the old city wall of ancient Paris, the Rotonde was built a year before the French Revolution by Claude Nicolas Ledoux, one of the founders of the neoclassical movement. It only just survived Haussmann, who wanted to knock it down in the aftermath of the fire of Paris in 1871, and the construction of second Metro line in 1903, which also threatened it with destruction. Today, miraculously conserved, the Rotonde is the jewel in the crown of a district that, since the development of the banks of the Ourcq canal, has been enjoying a thorough renaissance.

Rosa Bonheur

Bucolic delights reign at Rosa Bonheur, a bar set in a former guinguette in the heart of the Buttes Chaumont park. Its name loosely translates as ‘pink happiness’ but refers in particular to 19th-century French painter and sculptor ‘Rosa Bonheur’, famous for her depictions of animals and her role in the early feminist movement (alongside George Sand and Sarah Bernhardt). But the Bonheur is nothing if not relaxed in every sense, and for Parisians of all persuasions its terrace is the place to see and be seen in the summer – an idyllic spot in the park for wine and tapas with just the birds, bees and bobos for company.

Café Marly

The most beautiful vantage point for savoring the view of the Louvre, living the Louvre experience. Café Marly's name comes from the name of the Louvre's Cour Marly, where French sculptures from the 17th century are on display. This part of the museum can be seen through the windows inside the restaurant, specially designed by Yves Taralon and Olivier Gagnère. But Café Marly is also a sublime terrace under the archways that surround the Cour Napoleon, the best spot in Paris to admire Ieoh Ming Pei's famous glass pyramid.

You can sit outside drinking coffee or a fine martini as you peruse your own gallery of people, lounge inside reading a newspaper at the bar, enjoy a fine meal prepared by head chef Henrick Andersson, or make your way to the back where a library quietly welcomes you.

Bar Pershing Hall

Built by the Count of Paris at the end of the 18th century, this townhouse is still one of the most beautiful examples of Empire architecture from that period. Its facade, its large staircase, its room sizes and its elegant lines, only slightly altered over the decades, have helped the building to preserve the beauty and harmony of that period. When American troops were engaged in 1917, General John Pershing made it his general quarters before the building became the officers’ club of the American Legion in 1918.

Over the years, the Pershing Hall has undergone several changes. For its renovation in 2001, Andrée Putman redesigned the spaces with the grace for which she is known.

This is a unique place where the ambiance and light change throughout the day, evening and night. Its Patio, opening out on to the vertical garden by Patrick Blanc, is divided into private areas ideal for having a drink which becomes a "popular and trendy” venue when the lounge bar opens at 6 pm.

Le Garde Robe

This wine bar, near to the former Samaritaine department store building, will please even the most demanding epicureans. No Saint-Emilion or Château Latour here. Instead, with advice of the friendly owner, a self-taught wine buff (and depending on your budget) you’ll encounter unusual natural, organic or ‘biodynamic’ bottles from local growers. Biodynamic vineyards favour natural methods, managing the exchanges between the soil and the vine to better express their specific terroir, or spirit of the earth,in the grape. Does it really change anything? The purity, the complexity of the aromas, the minerals? You’ll have to taste them yourself to judge.

To go with the booze, choose between superior boards of cheeses and Parma ham, or oysters if you’re drinking white. With its brick walls and its ancient floorboards, Le Garde Robe is a warm and intimate address, if a little pricey (and there’s an obligatory corkage fee of €6 a bottle if you want to BYO) – but the bottles are worth their weight in gold.

L'épicerie musicale

Ideally situated on the Canal Saint-Martin, L’Epicerie Musicale is a delightful hybrid of café-bar-restaurant-delicatessen-music store. The retro furniture gives the interior all the charm of an old Sicilian café, offset by graffiti art on the walls, a deli section with fish, wine, oils, hams fresh cheeses and more imported from Italy, and a jazz, soul, funk, tropical and retro-latino soundtrack from hundreds of vinyl records. Highly recommended.

Les Sardignac

Les Sardignac, a small bistro opposite Les Folies Bergère owned by a couple of screenwriters. The terrace isn't very high up and the view isn't exactly breathtaking, but it is open and sunlit and never gets too packed. Ideally suited to a coffee in the afternoon or a glass of something stronger in the evening, the fresh air and chilled vibe will transport you a million miles away from Paris.

Add to this the fresh produce, simple and well-made dishes (burgers, salads, hotdogs, meat, fish and charcuterie plates – all around the 20€ mark), solid wine selection and friendly service, and you have all the ingredients for a good time - and you haven't even stepped inside the cinema yet. The prices are perhaps a little on the elevated side, but we think the quality food and great setting justify those extra centimes.

En attendant Rosa

This riverside bar comes into its own during the summer months. En attendant Rosa – which translates as ‘Waiting for Rosa’ – waits for warm(ish - this is Paris, after all) weather to start welcoming the crowds to its makeshift terrace. This year they proudly present their newest feature: the bar's own boat, which is moored at the bar’s current location underneath the Pont Alexandre III, serving as the bar’s permanent home. This is good news for its legions of fans, who come here to munch hot dogs and quaff reasonably-priced wine. The imaginative tapas are worth a try: tuna pâté, creamed artichoke and sea urchin taramasalata all figure.

Le Perchoir

Despite ‘speakeasy’ pretentions (the street entrance is unmarked), the place is becoming a victim of its own success, with queues out of the front door to be endured before you take the lift to the 7th floor. But once you do make it up there, you’ll find a vast space surrounding a handsome bar, comfortable sofas strewn with cushions, colourful plants and scented herbs planted in pots around the seats or hung from railings. Experimental Cocktail Club

You can kiss the bog standard bar scene’s endless stream of mojitos and caipirinhas goodbye. After the Experimental Cocktail Club’s mixes, you’ll never go back to the boring drinks that are to cocktail bars what McDonald’s is to Michelin stars. Paris has been slow to host the type of venues that are so fashionable in New York – ‘mixology’ bars that re-invent cocktails with strange spirits, fresh fruit juices and subtle spices – but now we have, for example, the Tommy’s Margarita Especial, an insane 100% agave tequila Arette mix with lime juice and organic agave honey, infused with Bourbon vanilla and cloves. Or perhaps the Bee’s Kiss, a balance between the Jamaican rum Appleton VX, cream, organic floral honey and crushed Indonesian pepper.
